Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus has offered a measured response to the controversy surrounding Hugo Keenan’s match-winning try in the British and Irish Lions’ second Test victory over Australia in Melbourne.

The incident in question involved a ruck cleanout by Lions flanker Jac Morgan on Wallabies forward Carlo Tizzano in the buildup to the decisive score.

Referee Andrea Piardi ruled that the clearout was legal, a decision that was upheld after review and later supported by World Rugby. The call sparked outrage from Australian head coach Joe Schmidt, who argued it contradicted the sport’s emphasis on player safety.

Speaking at a press conference in Johannesburg, Erasmus acknowledged the difficulty of the situation and empathised with both sides.

“I had Australia by four points in that game, so I lost our internal bet,” he joked, before turning serious.

“That is such a tough decision. World Rugby has come out and said it was the right decision. I know it’s a very tough call for the referee to make there.

He added that while he understands Schmidt’s frustration, he also recognises how pleased Lions coach Andy Farrell must have been.

“If I were Joe, I would be disappointed. If I were Andy, I would be really happy,” he noted. “For me to make a call here is tough. I didn’t go through those emotions.”

Erasmus, no stranger to controversy himself, stressed the importance of respecting the ruling.

“It was touch and go. I can understand what both coaches see. But World Rugby has ruled on it, and that is what everybody has to accept.”

The Lions’ 29-26 victory in Melbourne secured the series with one match to spare. They now head to Sydney aiming to complete a 3-0 whitewash, while Australia looks to restore pride in the final Test.
