Former England captain Owen Farrell is nearing a dramatic return to Saracens after a testing season with French Top 14 side Racing 92.
The 33-year-old is reportedly in the final stages of securing a move back to north London, with both Saracens and Racing 92 expected to finalise terms soon.
Farrell, who led England to a third-place finish at the 2023 Rugby World Cup and overtook Jonny Wilkinson as the nation's all-time top points scorer, stepped away from international duty following the tournament.
His tenure at Racing 92 has been marred by a persistent hip injury and a recent concussion, which limited his impact in France’s domestic league.
The upcoming move would mark a homecoming for Farrell, who spent 16 successful seasons at Saracens, helping the club secure six Premiership titles and three European Cups.
Although early reports suggested a five-year player-coach deal, sources close to the negotiations indicate that the likely contract will be for two years as a player only.
Saracens are currently dealing with the absence of Alex Lozowski, whose injury has created an opening in their squad. Under salary cap rules, the club is permitted to sign a replacement, and Farrell fits both the tactical and leadership requirements perfectly.
“He doesn't have to play 10, he can play other positions as well,” Saracens head coach Mark McCall said recently.
“So for our young talents who are developing, it could be a great thing to have him there. Owen's so willing to share his knowledge and his experience with younger players.”
While the return might be short-term on paper, many see this as the beginning of Farrell’s long-term future in coaching.
A transition into the Saracens coaching setup appears likely, following the path of his father Andy Farrell, who also began coaching at Saracens before going on to become a top-tier international coach with England, Ireland, and the British & Irish Lions.
If the move is confirmed in time, Farrell would become eligible for England’s upcoming summer tour of Argentina and the USA. However, RFU insiders have downplayed any immediate plans to fast-track him back into the squad.
