France flanker Oscar Jegou has been banned for four matches after being found guilty of foul play involving contact with the eye area of Scotland hooker Ewan Ashman during the Six Nations match at Murrayfield.
The suspension rules him out of France’s title-deciding clash against England and three upcoming fixtures for La Rochelle.
Oscar Jegou Banned After Scotland Incident
Jegou was cited following an incident in the second half of France’s 50-40 defeat to Scotland, when video footage showed him making contact with Ashman’s eye area during a maul close to the French try line.
Match officials did not penalise the incident during the game, but it was later reviewed by the disciplinary process. The hearing concluded that Jegou had committed foul play and handed down a four-match suspension.
France Lose Jegou For England Decider
The ban means France will be without Jegou for their final Six Nations match against England on March 14, a major blow ahead of a crucial title fixture.
He will also miss La Rochelle’s matches against Pau, Bayonne and Newcastle.
Disciplinary Panel Cuts Initial Sanction
The independent disciplinary committee said a low-end entry point of six weeks was considered appropriate, noting that no injury was caused to Ashman.
The panel then reduced the sanction by two weeks after taking into account mitigating factors such as Jegou’s good conduct and clean disciplinary record. No aggravating factors were applied.
