We’re all too used to reaching for a whey shake or chicken breast to get that post-workout protein hit. But with the new Multipower 50% Protein Bar XXL boasting a huge 50g of protein, its ratios seriously rival some of the market’s leading protein powders. We were dying to see if the taste and quality lived up to the hype - after all, life’s too short for bland food and boring supplements, right?

Taste and Texture

With just 2 grams of sugar per 100g bar, the 50% Protein Bar XXL tastes surprisingly like regular chocolate candy, but with less guilt and more gains. Many protein bars on the market have a distinct chalky texture so we were pleasantly surprised to discover the soft, chewy 50% Protein Bar XXL which is fudge-like and very chocolately. The smooth, nutty flavour of the Toffee Almond bar was easy to get down after a training session and so delicious that it felt like a real treat. The Chocolate Banana Crisp flavour packed more of a refreshingly fruity punch than the toffee version, so if you’re looking for a healthy snack to ward off mid-afternoon sweet cravings, then this would be a great option.

With these the only two flavours available to date, we can only hope that Multipower’s people are working on other taste combinations to keep us as excited…

Effectiveness

The 50% Protein Bar XXL packaging promises ‘premium quality’ and we have to agree. It combines whey isolate and casein for both fast and slow protein absorption, which makes it a real one-stop shop for muscle recovery and growth. The impressive protein content is matched with a reasonable amount of carbs and fat (Toffee Almond flavour contains 24.7g carbs, 4.7g saturated fats) for a reliable and viable snack with minimal fuss - suitable for dedicated athletes and compulsive snackers alike.

Value for money

Coming in at £32.99 for 16 bars (current offer on the Multipower website) the 50% Protein Bar XXL is relatively cheap compared to many competing brands. But before you throw-out your trusty whey shake, protein bars in general are still an expensive way to supplement protein, as the same protein serving size from a powder costs a fraction of the price. However, if you’re looking to mix-up your diet with a mouth-watering alternative then we think it’s worth splashing out.

Verdict

The ultimate protein bar should offer high protein content while curbing sugar cravings, and the Multipower 50% Protein Bar XXL delivers on both fronts. Whether your mission is to grow some serious muscle or simply to steer clear of the vending machine, this bar is a convenient and healthy snack for an on-the-go treat. It’s worth noting that this new addition to the Multipower family probably won’t be the cheapest bar on the shelf - so be sure to buy in bulk to keep the price down. Let’s be honest, if it stops you reaching for a Snickers even once, then you really can’t put a price on that.
