England captain Maro Itoje says returning to international rugby has helped him cope with the recent death of his mother as he prepares to face Scotland in the Six Nations Calcutta Cup match.

Maro Itoje Returns To England Starting XV

Itoje is back in the starting lineup after appearing as a substitute in England’s opening victory over Wales. He had missed parts of the pre-tournament camp while attending his mother’s funeral in Nigeria.

The lock said being back in the team environment has provided support and focus during a difficult period, describing rugby as a positive outlet while grieving. He added the support of teammates and staff has helped him settle back into preparation ahead of the Scotland fixture.

“It’s been great being back with the team,” Itoje said.

“It’s been great being with my team-mates and the coaching and support staff in this environment, which I love so much.

“Throwing yourself into a tournament like this is perhaps one of the best ways to get your mind off things.

“My mum was a huge influence in my life. There’s not a part of my life that her hand hasn’t been on. She will be sorely missed.”

England Prepare For Calcutta Cup Clash

England enter the Murrayfield match following a strong opening win but face a venue where results have been challenging in recent years. The Calcutta Cup remains one of rugby’s longest-standing rivalries, adding significance to the contest.

Itoje noted the intensity of England-Scotland encounters and emphasised the team’s aim to maintain momentum in the championship.

“It’s always a game that’s hotly contested and it’s lovely to be here in sunny Edinburgh for the fixture.

“Scotland and England are close neighbours. We’re fierce competitors. We know each other pretty well. That brings a competitive spirit in and of itself.

“It’s a game that’s full of pride, full of passion, full of edge. It’s one that we really want win to make sure we take the Calcutta Cup home with us.

“It’s an opportunity for us as this England team to create a new narrative. It’s an opportunity for us as a team to write a new chapter in our book.

“I very much welcome the challenge. I welcome playing at Murrayfield. I welcome being a part of this team and I welcome the opportunity at hand".
