Northampton centre Luther Burrell has been added to the England squad for the upcoming Australian tour in June replacing injured Leicester centre Manu Tuilagi.

Tuilagi sustained a hamstring injury while representing his club in the Aviva Premiership play-off against Saracens at the Allianz Park which eventually ruled him out of the high profile three-Tests against the Wallabies.

Burrell, who lost his place to the rugby league convert Sam Burgess in the last World Cup scored the opening try for England in the Old Mutual Wealth Cup against Wales at Twickenham on Sunday.

After the game against Wales, England coach Eddie Jones conceded that the choice to replace Tuilagi will be between Burrell and Ollie Devoto and the 28-year-old has been included after his impressive show against Warren Gartland’s men.

"It's a great opportunity for Luther, who played really well against Wales. He carried the ball well, defended with aggression and scored an excellent try," Jones said.

"We want players who are desperate to play for their country and are willing to make the sacrifices needed to succeed at the highest level.

"Luther's worked hard at his game since January and we've seen a significant improvement in his fitness and conditioning as a result. He thoroughly deserves his place on the tour.

“It was a tough selection call. Ollie Devoto has really impressed during his recent time in the England camp. We wish him a successful tour to South Africa with the Saxons."

Despite, not finding a place in the initial 32-man squad, Burrell is likely to be handed a debut in Australia considering a shaky performance from England midfield on Sunday.

Jonathan Joseph likely to take the inside centre while George Ford might lose his place to Owen Farrell after a disappointing outing against Wales where he missed six out of the seven kicks at the goal.

A likely Farrell promotion to 10 jersey means one among Ben Te'o, Henry Slade and Burrell is likely to be at 12.

Despite, included in the England squad, Burrell was disappointed at Tuilagi's injury and wished him for a speedy recovery.

"It wasn't a bitter-sweet moment for me when Manu was ruled out. Manu's a good mate of mine and a good player," Burrell said.

"It doesn't work like that for me, you want your strongest players on the field. He's a great player, a good mate. We keep on contact and it is unfortunate."
