Leinster and Munster will renew their historic rivalry this weekend in the first interprovincial derby of the season, with both sides looking to make a statement in the United Rugby Championship (URC).
Leinster, sitting tenth after defeats on the road to the Stormers and Bulls, will be eager to reignite their title defence when they host Munster, who currently sit second after three straight victories.
Despite their slow start, Leinster hold a strong record in recent meetings, having won eight of the last nine encounters between the sides. They also claimed a memorable 25-6 win in the 2009 Champions Cup semi-final, the only European clash between the two provinces.
Munster arrive in strong form, and Leinster lock Joe McCarthy admitted his team must be prepared for a high-intensity contest.
“It’s big, it’s always big”, he said.
“It’s a derby game so the intensity is usually ramped up.
“That adds spice to it and it’s always a fiery one
“We’ve got a few players coming back as well”.
The Aviva Stadium clash promises to deliver the trademark physicality and drama that has long defined this rivalry, as Leinster look to bounce back and Munster aim to extend their winning streak.
