Leicester Tigers hooker Finn Theobald-Thomas has been forced to retire from professional rugby with immediate effect on medical grounds at the age of 23.
Finn Theobald-Thomas retires from rugby
Theobald-Thomas joined Leicester ahead of the 2023/24 season and went on to make 33 appearances for the club.
Tigers have not disclosed the medical issue behind the decision. The club confirmed that both Leicester and the Rugby Players Association will continue to support him as he transitions into retirement.
Theobald-Thomas previously represented Worcester Warriors and Gloucester before moving to Leicester, while he also played for England at U20 level.
Theobald-Thomas reflects on early retirement
In a message announcing his retirement, Theobald-Thomas said it was difficult to accept that his playing career had been taken out of his hands.
"It's difficult to put into words what rugby has meant to me," Theobald-Thomas wrote on Instagram.
"This isn't how I imagined my career ending, and having something I've worked towards and loved for so much of my life taken out of my hands is incredibly difficult to accept.
"But when I look back, a kid from Bradmore lived the dream of playing for his boy hood rugby club, I feel nothing but pride and gratitude.
"Rugby has given me some of the best moments of my life, friendships that will last forever, and memories I'll carry with me long after I've stopped playing."
Geoff Parling pays tribute to Tigers hooker
Leicester head coach Geoff Parling said he was disappointed to see a promising career brought to a premature end.
“I’m gutted with this news of Finn’s retirement from rugby, both from a team point of view and for him personally to have such a promising rugby journey cut short,” Parling said.
He also praised Theobald-Thomas as an unselfish, team-focused character and said he would always remain part of the Leicester team.
