Kristian Phillips Interview

1. How do you think Ospreys doing this year?

The Ospreys have gone well this year, it was disappointing to get knocked out of the Heineken Cup but we are fully focused on regaining the Magners League championship title. The EDF competition was really successful also, but again with the way the groups were set out, it was disappointing not to go through to the semi final of that competition.

2. Where do you hope to see yourself in 5 years time?

On a personal note, my ambitions are to be a regular starter for the Ospreys, and push to get myself in the Welsh squad, so looking 5 years down the line, I would love to be having the opportunity to play for the Ospreys and Wales.

3. Have you any career highlights so far?

Career highlights for me so far would be making my Ospreys debut at the age of 17, also having two magners league records for 'youngest player to start and youngest player to score in a Magners League game', being selected in the Wales 6 Nations 2010 extended squad was a great achievement for me too and being part of the Wales 7's team is a great honour. Also, having the opportunity to play in the 'Help for heroes' game at Twickeham when I was 17, with both teams filled with legends of the game.

4. Who was your rugby hero growing up and have you got any heroes who are still playing?

My rugby heroes growing up were Brian O'Driscoll and Tana Umaga, I've always played at outside centre until hitting senior rugby, I love that position, and as Brian and Tana were both 13's they were my heroes.

5. What career would you be in if you hadn't became a rugby player?

Haven't really thought about this question a lot, as rugby is the only thing on my mind as regards to careers, but I think if I wasn't a rugby player, maybe a police man would be my kind of job, or fitness instructor something like that.

6. How does it feel coming out the end of a youth academy, has Ospreys taught you alot?

Yes I've definitely learnt so much at the Ospreys, being involved in a great region since the age of 15, playing for the under 16's,18's and senior team, it's a great place to learn your rugby.

7. Have you any close friends within rugby?

All of my friends play rugby, I spend each day training with most of them.

8. If any player could join Ospreys who would it be?

If I had one opportunity to sign one player for the Ospreys, I would probably choose 'Dan Carter', the impact he has on every game he plays is unbelievable, I think he would be a great investment for the Ospreys.

9. There are alot of world class players at the Ospreys have you learnt alot from the different players?

Yes definitely, especially in my position, where there are many internationals such as Tommy Bowe, Shane Williams and Nikki Walker, all pretty different types of players, spending each day training with these boys is definitely going to bring my game on.

10. Do you get time to watch any other Rugby Union leagues?

I love to watch the 'Super 15', it's a great brand of rugby and it's really exciting to watch, I also watch most test matches that are on TV. The Welsh Principality Premiership is another league which I spend time watching as this league provides the regions with quality players who represents the regions feeder teams.

11. What tips would you give to youngsters trying to make it in the rugby game as you have achieved success?

Be prepared to work really hard, nothing comes easy, stay focused and be mentally positive.
