Former All Blacks captain Kieran Read credited newly appointed forwards coach Jason Ryan for their win over South Africa at Ellis Park in the second round of the Rugby Championship.

The series defeat against Ireland at home last month saw New Zealand Rugby sack assistant coaches John Plumtree and Brad Mooar while Crusaders and Fiji forwards coach Jase Ryan has joined the backroom staff.

Even though New Zealand lost the opening game of the ongoing Rugby Championship competition to the Springboks, they bounced back with a 35-23 win against the same opponents at Ellis Park riding on tries from Sam Cane, Samisoni Taukei'aho, David Havili and Scott Barrett.

“I think it’s hard to see too much detail and maybe the attitude was the biggest one he could shift over in South Africa,” said Read in an interview with SENZ Radio.

“Just getting the guys more aligned I think could help.

“Jase is a smart man, and he would’ve seen a few things that he could’ve just provided up to a few guys, individually.

“I think the way he’s got his senior players in that forward pack stepping up. I guess he can lean on a few Crusaders; Sam Whitelock I’m sure would’ve had a big impact in there, echoing a bit of what Jase has been saying.

“And then Scott Barrett, I thought, had one of his best games in the lock jersey as well, he was brilliant and went all 80 minutes.

“So, he deserves a bit of credit there, old Jase.”

Beauden Barrett's injury in the opening round meant he was dropped to the bench for the last weekend's game with Richie Mo'unga starting at fly-half.

Read, who finished as the third-most-capped All Black in history, having played 128 tests, scoring 26 international tries lauded the Crusaders playmaker.

“Richie Mo’unga was the guy for me, who steered the ship around and got us in the right areas of the field,” he added.
