South Africa 23-35 New Zealand, Ellis Park

David Havili and Scott Barrett scored tries in the final 10 minutes as New Zealand bounced back with a 35-23 win in the second round of the Rugby Championship at Ellis Park on Saturday.

The All Blacks headed into the game under considerable pressure after having lost the previous game with a 26-10 margin but now have secured their first victory.

The opening minutes saw South Africa down to 14 players temporarily as Damian Willemse was sin-binned in the fifth minute for not rolling away but despite the numerical advantage the New Zealand failed to convert their attack into points.

The visitors finally got off the mark in the 22nd minute as South Africa infringed for an offside and Richie Mo'unga kicked a penalty goal to make it 0-3. Minutes later, New Zealand skipper Sam Cane dotted down after an offload from Will Jordan in the right corner but Mo'unga missed out on the conversion.

Ian Foster's men extended their lead further as Samisoni Taukei'aho bashed over in the 33rd minute and Mo'unga got the conversion right this time to make it 0-15.

The first response from the Boks came in the 38th minute as Lukhanyo Am brushed past Caleb Clarke to dot down and Handre Pollard followed with a conversion. At the stroke of half time, Pollard kicked a penalty goal to ensure South Africa reduced the gap to 10-15 at the end of the opening half.

The South African fly-half with another penalty kick early in the second half made it 13-15 but Mo'unga restores the five-point lead with a three-pointer of his own in the 47th minute.

South Africa thought they levelled the score in the 56th minute as Makazole Mapimpi went unopposed but an obstruction from scrum-half Jaden Hendrikse meant the try was disallowed.

A second penalty kick from Mo'unga made it 13-21 but the difference came down to just one point as Mapimpi goes over in the very same corner after collecting a perfect pass from Willemse and Pollard improved it.

The 67th minute saw Beauden Barrett was sin-binned for tackling Hendrikse off the ball and Pollard's penalty goal ensured the Boks had a 23-21 lead heading into the final 10 minutes. Despite being down by a player, New Zealand seized the decisive moment as Savea offloaded to David Havili, who went over and in the closing stage Scott Barrett barged over from close range as New Zealand returned back to winning ways.
