Scotland will miss the services of lock Grant Gilchrist for the Six Nations opener against Wales after he was handed a one-week suspension.

The 33-year-old was sent-off by referee Sara Cox during Edinburgh’s European Challenge Cup win over Scarlets after he received two yellow cards for dangerous tackles.

Gilchrist attended a disciplinary hearing headed by independent judicial officer Gareth Graham of England and was proved guilty of the charges.

The independent judicial officer handed Gilchrist a minimum suspension of one-week and with Edinburgh not having any game on the weekend, he will now miss Scotland's opening game of the Six Nations at Principality Stadium on 3rd February.

Gilchrist was already suspended for three games during last year's Six Nations tournament for a high tackle in the game against France.

He will be free to play in Scotland's second round game against France at Murrayfield on 10th February.
