Team GB were left to rue their mistakes as they lost their women's rugby sevens quarter-final 17-7 to USA at Stade de France.
GB went ahead in the first half via Ellie Boatman but the Americans pegged them back as Naya Tapper dotted down.
And the USA ensured they would be the side heading into the medal matches as Kirsti Krishe and Sammy Sullivan both scored in the second period.
GB go into the 5th-8th place play-off bracket, where they will first take on China on Tuesday.
"Sport is brutal and even more so sevens," GB's Emma Uren said. "You never know what side you are going to come out on. We are proud we threw a punch, we showed bits of our game that I don’t think we’ve shown in the last three games but this is elite sport and it’s brutal at the top. If you make one mistake, the other capitalises on it.
“We can always look back at games and think where did we go wrong, could we have done better? That is just us as elite players. To get to the point we are now, we are hard on ourselves and our performances.
"I wish it had gone a different way and I was thinking about medal matches but we still have an opportunity to go out there and show what we can do as players."
Elsewhere, reigning champions New Zealand progressed to the last four after hammering China 57-5. They will take on USA in the semi-finals while it was heartbreak for hosts France who lost 19-14 to Canada following Chloe Daniels' late try.
Canada's semi-final will be against Australia, who beat Ireland 40-7.
