Ireland and British & Irish Lions tighthead prop Tadhg Furlong is preparing for a strong return after enduring a challenging season plagued by recurring calf and hamstring issues.
Originally limited to around nine appearances due to persistent soft-tissue problems, Furlong now looks forward to rebuilding his match fitness.
Reflecting on his setbacks, Furlong admitted he faced numerous challenges: “I went through the wringer during Covid… I think I had 12 breakdowns on one injury…
"Then we went on a good run after that. Like, this recent one isn't that bad in comparison.”
He revealed how frustrations over his ongoing calf troubles led him to question his future:“I remember thinking at that stage, if I had to retire here, I've had a fair innings.”
His emotional resilience has come through, as he described feeling fortunate to still be playing: “I feel very fortunate to be where I am in some respects.”
With guidance from both medical and coaching staff, Furlong will be gradually reintroduced via a strategic front-row starting role in Ireland’s upcoming Test series—scheduled to include Fiji, Italy, and Australia. I
Furlong's season was also emotionally taxing, marked by the passing of his father and ongoing muscle irritations. Despite setbacks, he’s optimistic about his body’s durability, stating:
“One physio… told me, ‘You're a young man but not necessarily a young athlete.’ You have to be cute… listen to what your body is saying.”
