Bath Rugby have announced the signing of back rower GJ van Velze ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Born in South Africa, van Velze made his debut with Blue Bulls in 2008 and captained them to Currie Cup. He went on to make his Super Rugby debut with Bulls in 2010 before switching to Northampton Saints in 2012 during which he won the Premiership in 2014.

The 34-year-old joined Worcester in 2014 and was given the captaincy in his first season helping them to gain a promotion back to the top tier. He left them in 2021 after racking up 110 appearances for the club.

He also captained South Africa Academy, South Africa Under-19s and Under-20s.

“GJ has a great amount of Premiership experience which will prove influential for the squad over the season to come," said Bath head of rugby Johann van Graan.

“His leadership ability is a part of his character that I value and his ability to play four positions across the back five is very valuable through a season.”

Bath will kick-start the 2022/23 season of the Gallagher Premiership with a clash against Bristol Bears on 9th September.
