Former Wales international Andy Powell has announced his decision to retire from professional rugby with immediate effect.

The 35-year-old's decision came after he failed in his battle to recover from a knee injury which he sustained while playing for his club Merthyr. After making his debut for Wales against South Africa at Millennium Stadium in November, Powell has featured in 23 Tests for the national team, with his last appearance coming in February 2012.

Powell also was selected for the 2009 tour of South Africa for the British and Irish Lions but failed to play a single Test. He made his debut in club rugby for Newport Gwent Dragons in 1999 and has been part of Leicester, Scarlets, Cardiff Blues, Wasps and Sales.

Merthyr chairman Peter Morgan confirmed the news on Powell's retirement.

"Andy's found it hard to get over his current knee injury and will not be forgotten," said Morgan.

"He was a big part of our success last season as captain. Andy had plenty of time for everyone, he will be sadly missed on the field and off but will always be welcome to our club."

He switched codes to be part of the rugby league team Wigan in 2013/14 but returned back to rugby union a year later. In 2010, he was arrested for driving a golf buggy on the M4 motorway after which he lost his place in the national squad but later returned back to the team.
