England's 39-game winning streak ends in 26-26 draw over Canada

England’s 39-match winning run came to an end as Canada held the Red Roses to a thrilling 26-26 draw at Sandy Park in Exeter.

The hosts had to come from behind more than once in a contest that produced four tries for each side. England could not find a late winner despite heavy pressure in the closing stages, while Canada became the first team to avoid defeat against the Red Roses since New Zealand beat them in the 2022 Rugby World Cup final.

The result means England are now unbeaten in 40 Tests, but their perfect home record against Canada also came to an end.

Canada Start Strongly

Canada made a strong start and took the lead through Lizzie Gibson in the opening minutes.

England responded through Claudia Moloney-MacDonald, but Canada struck again when DaLeaka Menin crossed to restore the visitors’ advantage.

Hannah Botterman then powered over for England to bring the scores level, before Moloney-MacDonald gave the hosts the lead with her second try after a strong run from Sadia Kabeya.

Menin Levels Before Half-Time

Canada had earlier seen a brilliant solo effort from Asia Hogan-Rochester ruled out for a forward pass, but they continued to trouble England’s defence.

On the stroke of half-time, Menin crossed for her second try. Sophie de Goede converted to send the sides into the break level at 19-19.

Field And Apps Trade Tries

England had to withstand a strong spell of Canadian pressure at the start of the second half before moving back in front.

Prop Bryony Field scored to restore the lead for the hosts, with Zoe Harrison converting to make it 26-19.

Canada hit back through scrum-half Olivia Apps, who scored under the posts after a powerful run down the left by de Goede. The conversion levelled the match at 26-26.

England Denied Late Winner

The final 10 minutes were tense, with England pushing hard for the decisive score. The Red Roses were held up over the line and later lost possession near the posts as Canada defended with discipline.

England had chances to win it, but loose handling and Canada’s breakdown pressure kept them out. The draw ended England’s long winning streak and gave Canada a major result away from home.
