Exeter Chiefs have announced the signing of tighthead prop Ehren Painter from Gallagher Premiership rivals Northampton Saints with immediate effect.

Painter represented England at the Under 16, Under 17 and Under 18 levels while also representing their Under 20 side in the 2018 World Rugby Under 20 Championship where they finished runners up.

He made his first-team debut for the Saints in April 2018 and has made 84 appearances for them. His signing by the Chiefs follows after Harry Williams is sidelined with a knee injury.

“I’m looking forward to the move and being part of what should be a really exciting end to the season,” he said to the club's official website.

“Exeter are a club I have huge respect for. Having come up against them numerous times in the past, you know the threat they pose in terms of their pack of forwards.

“Strengths of what they do well are what I like to think I have within my own game. Going down there, testing myself in a new environment, I think it will be good for my game. Having a new outlook on things, learning from different coaches, playing with different players, it’s all going to add to my game."

The 24-year-old also thanked the Saints for the support over the years.

“At the same time, I want to say a huge than-you to everyone at the Saints. I’ve loved my time at the club and enjoyed some very special memories over the years. I’ve made lifelong friends and I will always be grateful for the opportunities they have given me.
