Eddie talks England Rugby

We were ready for Eddie as he talked to the press today at Twickenham. Here are some key messages that we feel resonate with ordinary rugby union fans.

Firstly he reminded us that it’s 33 blokes competing for 23 places

Those players must bring Enthusiasm, Energy and Hard Work when they turn up for training; then they have got to enjoy playing for England and preferably with a smile.

Eddie reminded us that England are ranked 4th in 6 Nations over the past few years. This is not acceptable and will change.

He was asked about missing players such as Danny Cipriani and Tom Youngs; however, he answered that there were lots of disappointed players who were spoken to personally. He wasn’t sure that those not included heard every word. Those words included what they need to do in the future. Performances in the Aviva Premiership and Europe.

Eddie was anxious to use words like chat and talk; pointedly telling us he chatted to Cockers about Manu and it looks like he will be ready for Ireland game – then cheekily added, if not before.

As to what England Rugby fans can expect, the answer highlighted the word enjoy. Fans will see England enjoying playing based on a strong set piece but then able to move the ball efficiently.

Furthermore, Eddie revealed that once he understood the definition of the word radical, he might look to play that way. If he can’t find a definition then it is simply going to mean playing really good rugby.

Captaincy was an area for questioning by the rugby press and this was our favourite response – when we have 15 players we will worry about the captain then.

Maro Itoje will bring energy and potentially plus he is playing very well was a strong message from England defence coach Paul Gustard; who also revealed he was his mentor at Saracens.

Gustard heaped praise on another Saracens player, Chris Ashton. He commented that he was pleased he is back from the wilderness and is in good form.
