Munster back-rower CJ Stander has penned a two-year contract extension that will keep him at the province until at least June 2018.

The former South African Under-20 international who can play at either flanker or Number 8 made his Munster debut in November 2012 and, having recently qualified for Ireland on residency basis, could now be in line to be selected in Joe Schmidt's Six Nations squad.

"I am delighted to be committing my future to Munster Rugby," said Stander, who has scored an impressive 22 tries in just 69 appearances for the region.

"This is very much home for me and it is a huge honour to represent the red jersey every week."

The 25-year-old was named Munster’s player of the season in 2014-15 and has served as captain this year in the absence of Peter O'Mahony

"Getting this news at this stage of the season is a great boost for the squad.” Munster head coach Anthony Foley commented.

"In securing the services of CJ for a further two years we are holding on to a key player within our group, one that gives everything to the jersey each week.

"At such a young age he has shown his leadership qualities on and off the field and we know there is still more to come."
