Bristol Bears have confirmed the signing of Dragons utility back Zane Kirchner on loan with immediate effect.

The 34-year-old will move to Ashton Gate next month and has represented Bulls and Leinster before he joined Dragons in 2017.

Bristol head coach Pat Lam believes Kirchner's addition will provide depth to the squad after injury setbacks.

“With three of our first team fullbacks recovering from injury, it was important to add a player of Zane’s ability and international experience on a short-term basis as we prepare for the tough challenges ahead,” said Lam.

“Zane has played for some of the top clubs in world rugby and will slot in quickly. We’re grateful to Bernard Jackman and Dragons for their co-operation in the process.”

Kirchner also went on to play 31 Tests for South Africa between 2009 and 2015 in which he scored five tries.

Bristol Bears are positioned eighth in the Gallagher Premiership table after winning and losing a game apiece and are set to face Gloucester Rugby in the third round at Kingsholm on 15th September.
