England head coach Steve Borthwick has expressed his desire for a significant number of England players to be included in the British & Irish Lions squad for the upcoming tour of Australia.

With England showing notable progress during the Six Nations, Borthwick believes his players have proven their ability to perform on rugby’s biggest stages.

Since taking charge, Borthwick has led England through a transitional phase, gradually building a side capable of competing at the highest level.

Their performances in the Six Nations reflected this evolution, with key players stepping up in crucial moments. One of the standout figures has been Maro Itoje, whom many consider a frontrunner for the Lions captaincy.

Highlighting England’s resurgence, Borthwick emphasized the importance of his players gaining Lions experience.

“What I hope for is that England is well represented in that squad,” he said. “Because for a player to be selected for the Lions is a great honour and a brilliant opportunity to go and be part of something very special.”

While Borthwick is eager to see his players selected, he acknowledged that Lions head coach Andy Farrell might not include any of England’s coaching staff.

“I don’t anticipate there being any English coaches going on that tour,” he admitted. Despite this, he remains focused on supporting his squad and ensuring that they are in the best position for selection.

The final Lions squad will be announced on May 8, with competition fierce among players from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Given England’s strong Six Nations campaign, Borthwick is optimistic about their representation.

“What I want is for England to be well represented,” he reiterated, underlining the significance of such an opportunity for his squad.
