France is the favourite to win the Six Nations Championship, with Ireland a close second and England a far off third.

What is the Six Nations?

The Six Nations Championship was formed in 1883 when it was known as the Home Nations. It involved England, Ireland, Wales, and Scotland, with Scotland dominating. In 1910, the name was changed to "Five Nations" as France joined it. In 2000, they finally became known as the Six Nations when Italy entered the tournament.

What countries are in the Six Nations?

FRANCE

France competes in the tournament every year. They started to play there in 1910 when the Home Nations became the Five Nations. In the tournament's history, they rank third among countries in terms of wins, behind England by 11 wins. However, it must be borne in mind that France has participated in 34 fewer tournaments. They are the most successful country in this tournament since World War II.

France has a young team. The main players, like Gregory Alldritt, Antoine Dupont, Melvyn Jaminet, and Romain Ntamack, are all 25 years old or younger.

The France national rugby union team are now the bookies’ favourites to win the 2023 Six Nations Championship at odds of 11/8. But you should bear in mind that this year Les Blues did not easily win the Six Nations. And their favourite status can put extra pressure on the players.

IRELAND

The Irish rugby team consists of rugby players from both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Ireland is one of the strongest rugby teams in the world.

The Irish team has competed in Europe's most prestigious tournament, the Six Nations Cup, every year since the tournament was founded in 1883, and has won it 14 times.

Their chances of winning are quite high, so the odds of 6/4 are offered on Ireland's win.

ENGLAND

The English have won the Six Nations Cup trophy a record 29 times, which makes the team the most successful competitor in the tournament's history. In 2003, England became the first and only team from the Northern Hemisphere that won the World Cup.

Right now, though, England is not in the best shape and this year had two wins and three losses in this tournament. Therefore, bookmakers offer odds of 9/2 on England to win the Six Nations.

WALES

The Welsh national rugby team is managed by the Welsh Rugby Union and is regarded as one of the strongest in the world. Since 1883, the national team has competed every year in the Six Nations Championship, Europe's most prestigious rugby competition at national team level. They have won the tournament 28 times, the last time in 2021. With six titles, Wales are the most successful team in the Six Nations since 2005.

This year's Six Nations was a disappointing one for the Welsh team. Many key players were injured. The reigning champions of the tournament then finished in fifth place. The 76 points scored was an anti-record for Wales at the Six Nations, showing a major setback in their game.

So now bookmakers offer the odds of 14/1 for Wales to win the Six Nations Championship.

SCOTLAND

The Scotland national rugby union team is managed by the Scottish Rugby Union. World Rugby refers to high-performance national teams, i.e. the strongest teams in the world. The Scots have competed in the Six Nations Championship every year and have won it 14 times, including the last Five Nations Cup in 1999, which was their most recent win as well.

In 2022, the Scots were hoping for their first title in more than two decades but finished the Six Nations Championship in fourth place.

The Scots have a slim chance of success next  year as well, so the bookmakers offer the odds of 16/1 on their win.

ITALY

The Italy national rugby union team is managed by the Italian Rugby Federation and is one of the best in Europe. World Rugby classifies the Italian team as a high-performance team, i.e. one of the strongest teams in the world.

Since 2000, the Italian team has regularly taken part in Europe's most prestigious rugby tournament, the Six Nations Cup, where they have never finished higher than 4th place.

So, almost nobody believes that Italy will win the Six Nations next year. That’s why the odds for Italy to win are 1000/1.
