Mark Bennett still hopes to feature for Scotland at the World Cup despite being forced to undergo shoulder surgery

Glasgow centre Mark Bennett faces a race against time to be fit for Scotland's World Cup squad after he was ruled out for the rest of Warriors' Guinness Pro12 campaign following shoulder surgery.

Bennett picked up his injury playing for his country in the RBS 6 Nations but it was hoped that he would not require an operation.

But following an MRI scan at BMI Ross Hall Hospital, the 22-year-old's doctors were forced to admit he would need to go under the knife to correct the problem.

Bennett is now facing a " period of rehabilitation" as he battles to recover in time to make Vern Cotter's Dark Blues travelling party for September's World Cup kick-off.

Meanwhile, it has also been confirmed that Glasgow winger DTH van der Merwe sustained a hand injury during the Warriors' win over Cardiff Blues last Friday.

The Canadian international has undergone surgery under the care of orthopaedic consultant Doug Campbell, who specialises in hand/wrist surgery.

However, Glasgow hope Van der Merwe - who will join the Scarlets this summer - could make a possible return before the end of the season.
