England and Saracens prop Mako Vunipola has been sidelined for up to 10 weeks following an ankle surgery.

The 31-year-old sustained the injury while playing for his club in the recent Gallagher Premiership game against Leicester Tigers on 5th March where he was replaced in the second minute.

A statement released by Saracens confirmed that Vunipola will be out of action for 10 weeks.

"Mako Vunipola has today [Monday] undergone surgery on an ankle injury suffered in the win over Leicester Tigers," read the statement.

"It is expected that he will return to action in 8-10 weeks".

Vunipola has played 67 Tests for England but was overlooked by Eddie Jones with his last appearance for the red rose team coming in 2021 Six Nations. He last played at the international level during the British and Irish Lions' tour of South Africa in August last year.

Saracens are positioned second in the Gallagher Premiership table with 12 wins from 18 games and will face Bristol Bears next at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 26th March.
