British and Irish Lions coach Andy Farrell has called on his squad to remain grounded ahead of Saturday’s first Test against Australia in Brisbane.
Despite being favourites, he emphasized the necessity of staying focused.
“There’s no overconfidence at all,” said Farrell. “There’s a realisation of what it is, and what it means and how privileged we are… but that doesn’t get in the way of how we prepare to make sure that we allow ourselves to be the best version of ourselves.”
He added that true quality shows under pressure: “The test of the best laid plans is when you get punched on the nose.”
The Lions have named a strong lineup. The forward pack will feature Ellis Genge, Tadhg Beirne, and Tom Curry, while the midfield includes Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones. Notably, the squad contains no Welsh players—the first time this has happened in a Lions Test lineup since 1896.
Australia, coached by Joe Schmidt, has made changes due to injuries to Rob Valetini, Will Skelton, and fly-half Noah Lolesio. Joe Schmidt has brought in Tom Lynagh, son of Wallabies legend Michael Lynagh, at fly-half and Nick Champion de Crespigny will also debut.
Although the Lions are undefeated on tour, Farrell reinforced that the match must be earned: “We’re favourites, yes, but top teams perform under pressure—not because they expect to win.”
