The All Blacks have suffered a double setback ahead of their Rugby Championship rematch with Argentina in Buenos Aires after injuries ruled out two key players.
Lock Patrick Tuipulotu was forced off the field during the first Test in Córdoba and later taken to hospital. Scans revealed a facial fracture that requires surgery, ruling him out for around six weeks.
He has now returned home for treatment, leaving a gap in the second row that head coach Scott Robertson must urgently fill.
Centre Anton Lienert-Brown was also ruled out after failing a head injury assessment. He will follow mandatory concussion protocols and will not be available for selection in Buenos Aires.
His absence leaves Robertson with a difficult choice in midfield, with Quinn Tupaea and Timoci Tavatavanawai likely candidates to step in.
Despite the setbacks, Robertson highlighted the squad’s depth. Josh Lord is expected to provide lock cover, while the potential return of Wallace Sititi and Tamaiti Williams from earlier injuries offers some relief.
Robertson said the injuries would give others a chance to step up and gain valuable experience.
The All Blacks climbed back to world number one after their 41-24 victory over Argentina, but Robertson stressed that rankings were secondary.
“We’re focused on building combinations and making sure we get our game right,” he said.
