Stormers director of rugby John Dobson has highlighted Siya Kolisi’s immediate impact on the squad, praising the Springbok captain’s leadership, physical presence and influence ahead of his return against Edinburgh.
Dobson praises Siya Kolisi’s leadership
Kolisi linked up with the Stormers during their opening two-match United Rugby Championship tour after sitting out South Africa’s recent Test against Australia and has been named to start at openside flank against Edinburgh.
Dobson said Kolisi’s influence has already extended beyond his playing role, particularly through the standards and energy he brings to the group.
“He’s not an out-and-out stealer; he gets turnovers through his tackling and counter-rucking,” Dobson said.
“In terms of leadership, he’s got a big role to play, probably around the integration of the Springboks and setting standards.”
Kolisi brings energy to Stormers squad
Kolisi did not feature in last week’s 29-15 victory over Connacht after joining the squad in Galway, although he took part in the team’s warm-up.
Dobson said Kolisi’s personality and presence had already lifted the squad, pointing to the energy he brings around the group.
“His presence, just the smile and the songs and everything, it lifts the team,” Dobson said.
He added, however, that the Stormers’ immediate focus remains on what Kolisi can contribute on the field against Edinburgh.
“But there’s no question that the rugby contribution is what we’re after and what we need tomorrow.”
Dobson highlights Kolisi’s physical presence
Dobson also remarked on Kolisi’s size since returning to the Stormers, saying the 35-year-old has developed physically since his previous spell with the club.
“What I can’t get over with Siya, and it’s going to sound like a silly point, is the size of him,” Dobson said.
“He’s certainly a bigger man than he was when he left here. He’s a really big presence, and I think that’s going to be useful on the 4G.”
Kolisi will make his 119th Stormers appearance against Edinburgh after previously making 118 appearances before leaving the club in 2021.
