Hull University’s first team pulled off an incredible upset away from home in the Northern 1A BUCS rugby league, with a 37-22 drubbing of league leaders and local rivals Leeds Met.

As ever, Talking Rugby Union were out and about around the country bringing you all the latest action, videos, scores and match analysis from Wednesday’s university rugby.

Fourth place Hull made the short trip to top of the league Leeds yesterday for an all Yorkshire clash.
After an impressive display of running rugby from the visitors, Hull emerged comfortable victors.

Hull vice-Captain, Billy Williams, spoke to Talking Rugby Union after the game and said that it was a “brilliant victory away from home for the club.

“We had a few injuries to key players before the game and had to call in a few new boys at short notice, but we played a great game of rugby.

“Our attack was unbelievable; our fluidity amongst the team was amazing to be a part of. I don’t think I’ve ever seen us play that well.

“We’ve lost quite a lot of key players in the last year and we’ve lost a lot of size, but I think, yesterday especially, we’ve made up for it with our work rate, handling and desire around the pitch.”

Next week the Yorkshire outfit welcome the University of Liverpool to the White Rose County. Liverpool currently sit in second place, joint on 12 points with leaders Leeds Met. Liverpool comprehensively beat Hull in the same fixture last year, and Williams is under no illusion that the game will be anything other than difficult:

“When we played them last year they thrashed us – I think they put about 50 points past us – but we then played them later on in the season at home and won well.

“So we are never too sure what to expect really, but I don’t think they travel too well. The three hours over to Hull is a long way, and hopefully that will give us a bit of an advantage.”

Hull 2013 Tour President Chris Tribley, is out of action this season die to a year’s placement; however, the former Lancashire hooker told Talking Rugby Union that “such a big win away from home is a great result for the boys, and is sure to give them a boost in the right direction for the rest of the season.

“Last year, perhaps, we under-performed slightly: we had a promising team, but struggled with some of the big games last year.

“However, to get such a big win against the top side in the league hints that we’re hopefully starting to get it right.”
