Wales have been handed a significant boost in their Six Nations campaign with the return of Ospreys hooker Dewi Lake to the squad ahead of their upcoming clashes with Scotland and England.
The 25-year-old, who previously captained Wales on their summer tour to Australia and the Autumn Nations Series, has recovered from biceps surgery ahead of schedule.
Lake initially faced a 12-week recovery period after sustaining the injury in training in December. However, his rehabilitation progressed faster than expected, allowing him to rejoin the national setup earlier than anticipated.
With 18 caps to his name, Lake is not only a key figure for Wales but is also seen as a strong contender for selection in the British and Irish Lions’ 2025 tour of Australia.
Interim head coach Matt Sherratt will welcome Lake’s return as Wales continue their transition period following Warren Gatland’s departure.
Despite their 27-18 defeat to Ireland, Wales showed signs of improvement, with Sherratt’s influence already making an impact.
Lake’s inclusion takes the squad up to 38 players, where he will join fellow hookers Elliot Dee, Evan Lloyd, and Sam Parry. His experience and leadership qualities will be a valuable addition as Wales aim to end their disappointing run of 15 consecutive Test defeats.
In preparation for the next stage of the Six Nations, the Welsh Rugby Union has also confirmed that six players will return to their respective United Rugby Championship (URC) clubs before rejoining the national squad on 3 March.
Among those released are Ospreys trio Sam Parry, Dan Edwards, and Ben Warren, along with Scarlets duo Joe Roberts and Taine Plumtree, and Cardiff scrum-half Ellis Bevan.
Wales will next face Scotland at Murrayfield on 9 March, before concluding their campaign with a home fixture against England on 15 March.
