England head coach Steve Borthwick has strongly defended flanker Tom Curry’s character after allegations of a tunnel confrontation, following England’s 27–23 win over Argentina.
The meeting at Allianz Stadium saw Argentina coach Felipe Contepomi accuse Curry of shoving him after a late challenge that injured Argentine full-back Juan Cruz Mallía.
Borthwick acknowledged awareness of the tunnel incident but emphasised he did not witness it.
He said: “I’m aware there was an incident. I wasn’t there, I was in the changing room.
"But anybody who’s had any contact with Tom Curry knows his character is impeccable.
"He’s a fantastic team man and a respectful guy.”
The controversy erupted when Argentina complained a late tackle by Curry on Mallía was reckless and left the Pumas with 14 men in the closing stages.
Contepomi described the tackle and subsequent tunnel exchange as unacceptable, labelling Curry a “bully.”
England’s management and players have since defended Curry’s reputation and urged the focus remain on the Test match rather than the incident.
