South African rugby is mourning the loss of Cornal Hendricks, the former Springbok winger, who passed away at the age of 37 on Wednesday following a heart attack.

Hendricks, known for his electrifying pace and inspiring comeback story, leaves behind a legacy of courage, perseverance, and passion for the game.

Hendricks earned 12 caps for South Africa between 2014 and 2015, scoring five tries in the green and gold. He made his Test debut against Wales in 2014 and was admired for his dynamic attacking style and infectious energy on the field.

Before representing the Springboks in the 15-a-side format, he had already made his mark in rugby sevens, playing for the Blitzboks from 2011 to 2014. His sevens career included appearances at the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens and a gold medal-winning campaign at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

In 2015, Hendricks’ career appeared to be cut short after he was diagnosed with a heart condition, forcing an early retirement from professional rugby.

However, his determination and faith led him to seek a second medical opinion, and in 2019, he made a remarkable return to the field with the Bulls, reigniting a career that many thought had ended prematurely.

He went on to become a vital presence in the Pretoria-based Bulls squad, not just as a player but also as a symbol of resilience and hope.

Over the course of his career, Hendricks played 233 first-class matches across various formats and competitions in a span of 17 years.

Bulls director of rugby Jake White paid tribute to Hendricks, saying: “Many people were shocked and sad when his career was cut short in 2015.

"When we had the opportunity to get him back on the park, he took that with open arms and made a remarkable use of his second lease in professional rugby.

"We all witnessed him leave no stone unturned as he inspired his team-mates and the South African community through his story of hope and courage. Rugby has lost one of the good ones.”

South African Rugby Union president Mark Alexander also remembered Hendricks as a player who brought joy and humility to the game:

“Cornal was one of those players who loved the game and he worked extremely hard, but he always did so with a smile on his face, treating all people with respect.

"His energy and love of life, on and off the field, lifted his team-mates and those around him. His contributions to the sport and his unwavering dedication will always be remembered.”
