Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has called up hooker Johnny Matthews to the national squad for their upcoming autumn international against Portugal at Murrayfield on Saturday.

Matthews, currently in strong try-scoring form for Glasgow Warriors, was initially a surprising omission from the squad, but he now joins Townsend’s ranks amid a series of injury setbacks following Scotland's loss to South Africa last weekend.

The additions of Matthews and loosehead prop Alec Hepburn come as Townsend faces several injury concerns in the forward pack. Max Williamson and Jack Dempsey are sidelined after sustaining hand and shoulder injuries, respectively, during the intense clash against the Springboks.

Flanker Gregor Brown is also out, nursing a rib injury. These absences have necessitated the reinforcement of the squad as they prepare for the second of their three autumn internationals.

Matthews' inclusion is a boost for the Scottish side, particularly in the hooker position. He has recently showcased impressive try-scoring abilities with Glasgow Warriors, making him a natural choice as Townsend seeks to rebuild his forward pack amid these injuries.

Alongside Matthews, Hepburn brings experience to Scotland’s front row. The loosehead prop’s physicality and scrummaging skills are expected to add stability as the Scots look to bounce back from their loss to South Africa and secure a strong performance against Portugal.

Meanwhile, Scotland lock Scott Cummings is set to appear before an independent disciplinary panel on Tuesday evening via video link.

Cummings received a red card during the South Africa game for a ruck infringement, a move that could see him sidelined depending on the outcome of the hearing. The decision will determine his availability for the remainder of the autumn series, including Scotland’s closing fixture against Australia on November 24.

The red card incident adds to the challenges Townsend faces as he seeks to refine Scotland’s approach for the remainder of the autumn internationals. Cummings' presence has been pivotal in the forward line, and his absence would be a blow to Scotland’s defensive and set-piece strategies.

Following the physical encounter with South Africa, the team will be looking to reset and bring a sharper edge to their game as they face
