Mahonri Schwalger, head coach of the Samoa national rugby team, has officially stepped down from his role following legal charges, the Samoa Rugby Union confirmed.

The charges against Schwalger, a former captain and celebrated figure in Samoan rugby, remain undisclosed. His resignation comes at a critical time as Samoa Rugby is looking to rebuild its stature on the global stage.

Schwalger, who took on the coaching mantle to guide Samoa to greater heights, has been praised for his contributions to the team’s development. His leadership was viewed as a crucial factor in driving the team’s competitive resurgence. However, the recent turn of events has forced him to relinquish his duties prematurely.

"This resignation follows a period of suspension granted to him following the filing of criminal charges against him in court," Malielegaoi said in a statement posted on social media.

"Under his leadership in the past year, 2024 Manu Samoa achieved significant milestones including strong performances on the international stage, beginning with defeating Tier 1 Nation Italy at home and a respectable performance in the Pacific Nations Cup.

"Lakapi Samoa will begin the search for a new head coach and remains committed to ensuring that Manu Samoa continues to grow and succeed at the highest levels of international rugby."

The departure of Schwalger leaves a leadership void, with no interim or permanent replacement announced. The timing is particularly concerning as the team prepares for critical fixtures in the upcoming season.
