Sale Sharks have confirmed that former Italy captain Marco Bortolami will lead the club as head coach for the 2025/26 Gallagher Premiership season.
The 43-year-old joins after an impressive tenure at Benetton Rugby, replacing Paul Deacon, who departs after ten years of service.
Renowned for his leadership on the pitch and sharp tactical mind off it, Bortolami captained Italy at the age of 22 and earned over 80 international caps.
After retiring from professional rugby, he quickly rose through the coaching ranks in Italy and was instrumental in modernising Benetton’s approach to the game.
In his first words as Sharks head coach, Bortolami stated, “I’m incredibly proud to be joining Sale Sharks – a club with great history and tradition, and one which is hugely respected across Europe.”
He added, “I’ve loved my time at Benetton and I want to thank everyone there, but this is the right time for me to take on a new challenge in a different environment.”
Sale’s Director of Rugby Alex Sanderson said, “Marco was our number one choice. He’s very passionate, very driven and hugely knowledgeable – someone who cares deeply about his players and wants to create a winning culture.”
Sanderson also emphasized Bortolami’s man-management and player development strengths, which align with Sale’s long-term goals.
Sale Sharks finished the 2024/25 season third in the Gallagher Premiership table following which they were edged out 16-21 in the semi-final against Leicester Tigers.
