Rugby World Cup Match Preview - England vs Romania

Martin Johnson has called for his England side to make "big improvements when they face Romania on Saturday morning.

England were hugely underwhelming in their opening two matches of the tournament, the main area of concern for the 2003 champions is discipline. In two games England have conceded 26 penalties and have been shown two yellow cards.

Their card is now well and truly marked. Referees are now looking to penalise them, they have to be squeaky clean in all departments. They need to take the focus of them, and make the officials look at what the opposition is doing.

James Haskell called for individual's to take responsibility for their actions, and he is right. As professionals they have to admit to their mistakes and rectify them in the next game.  Silly errors are costing England and they cannot afford to keep making the same mistakes each game.

There were some positives for England to take from their 41-10 victory over Georgia, when they moved the ball wide and controlled the tempo they created opportunities. But all too often they were looking for the killer pass or the Hollywood break, instead of just keeping the ball and waiting for the chance.

Ahead of the Romania match Johnson has once again tinkered with the side, making seven changes. This is arguably the strongest team available to the England manager, with the exception of Courtney Lawes in the second row.

Mike Tindall returns to the side at inside centre to partner Manu Tuilagi. The Gloucester man needs to have a massive game, after his misdemeanours of the field, he needs to silence the critics with a display similar to the one in Ireland before the start of the tournament.

Elsewhere in the backline Jonny Wilkinson returns at stand-off, like Tindall the 2003 hero needs a big performance. He has to unleash the back-three and play with his head up, it has become all too common to see Wilkinson just playing safe and kicking. On Saturday this cannot happen.

Mark Cueto returns on the wing for his first appearance of the tournament, the Sale man brings experience and a great work-rate to the back-three. His combination with Foden and Ashton was essential to England in the Six Nations and he needs to rediscover his form quickly.

The other changes come in the pack, Alex Corbisiero comes in at loosehead. I'm delighted to see the London Irish youngster in the side, his carrying ability and handling skills are a real plus for England. At hooker Steve Thompson returns in place of Dylan Hartley, he will relish the chance to put right the mistakes he made against Argentina and he will put in a good shift.

In the second row Louis Deacon returns in place of Simon Shaw, but the Leicester Tigers player can consider himself lucky to be starting. Shaw was immense last week and was the standout player in the forwards. Deacon will work hard but doesn't have the hands or rugby intelligence of Shaw.

The final change is at blindside flanker where Tom Croft replaces Tom Wood. Croft is struggling for form at the moment, hopefully this game will give him a chance to showcase his talent. He is a match winner when he is on form, and one of the few world-class players in the side.

Romania have made several changes to their side, and most of the changes suggest that they are looking at the game against Georgia as the best chance for victory.

England have to come out and dominate from the first whistle, it will not be enough for them to just wait for the Romanians to tire in the final 20 and run in some easy tries. They should take a leaf out of South Africa's book, they completely controlled the game against Namibia and were ruthless in their execution. That is the blueprint for England to follow.

But it wouldn't be surprising to see England struggle as they did against Georgia. The key will be discipline if England keep the penalties to a minimum they will have no problems. If they let Romania into the game it will be a long night.

It is potentially the defining game for England, they have to lay down a marker and show the rest of the world that they mean business.
