Owen Farrell has officially been called up to the British & Irish Lions squad, replacing Elliot Daly, whose wrist injury has ruled him out for the remainder of the tour in Australia.

The experienced England fly-half is set to join the team in Sydney on Friday.

The decision comes after Daly sustained a serious arm injury during the Lions’ 52–12 win over the Queensland Reds. His early substitution and subsequent medical assessment confirmed the worst for the Lions camp.

Lions head coach Andy Farrell acknowledged the emotional weight of the setback.

“It’s heartbreaking for the group to lose a player like Elliot. He’s a Lions legend and very much part of our core,” Farrell said, underlining Daly's presence both on and off the field.

The inclusion of Owen Farrell marks his fourth British & Irish Lions tour, following appearances in 2013, 2017, and 2021. Though he hasn’t played for England since the 2023 Rugby World Cup, the 33-year-old brings with him a wealth of experience, with 112 caps to his name.

Andy Farrell stressed the value of bringing in a player of his calibre: “Owen will now come in and add to our options and bring his own Lions experience to the group,” he said.

Farrell's selection is expected to provide depth in both fly-half and centre roles, and his arrival intensifies competition among the likes of Finn Russell, Fin Smith, and Marcus Smith—all jostling for a spot in the Test team.

Lions prepare to face the Waratahs on Saturday with the first Test against Australia scheduled on 19th July.
