New Zealand have dropped to the fifth position in the World Rugby Rankings following their defeat against South Africa in the Rugby Championship opener.

Having headed into the Rugby Championship following a series defeat against Ireland, the All Blacks faced a 10-26 loss against the Springboks at Mbombela Stadium with Kurt-Lee Arendse and Willie Le Roux scoring tries for the home side and a 16-point contribution from Handre Pollard.

The result meant New Zealand lost 0.80 rating points and now have 86.13 in their tally that has taken them to the fifth position - their record low pushing England to fourth place with the difference between the two teams now at 0.12 rating points.

South Africa's win meant now they have the same rating points as second placed France but a win next weekend in Johannesburg will see them separated and have the second position on their own.

Meanwhile, Australia's win over Argentina saw them gain 1.13 rating points but they continue to remain at sixth place with the Pumas retaining their place at ninth.

The second round will see New Zealand looking to avenge their defeat against South Africa at Ellis Park while Argentina host Australia at Estadio Bicentenario with both the matches scheduled on 13th August.
