Munster Rugby finds itself in a challenging position as forwards coach Andi Kyriacou steps down, leaving the province without a permanent head coach or forwards coach.
This development comes just six games into the URC season, following Graham Rowntree’s earlier departure as head coach.
Kyriacou’s decision to leave Munster has been attributed to personal reasons, with the former coach expressing a desire to reunite with his family in England. The announcement comes amidst speculation over internal discontent within the coaching staff.
Kyriacou, who played for Munster during the 2006/07 season, rejoined the club in 2021 as an elite player development officer before being promoted to forwards coach by Rowntree in 2022.
The pair reportedly shared a close professional relationship, but ongoing challenges appear to have influenced Kyriacou’s decision to leave.
Ireland Women’s forwards coach Alex Codling has been linked as a potential interim replacement for Kyriacou.
However, Munster is yet to confirm a long-term plan for the role. The province now faces the daunting task of filling two crucial coaching positions before resuming URC action against the Lions at Thomond Park.
Munster CEO Ian Flanagan thanked Kyriacou for his contributions, highlighting his role in player development and his impact on Munster’s 2022/23 URC triumph.
“We would like to thank Andi for all his hard work over the last number of years… I wish Andi and his family the very best for the future,” Flanagan said.
Reflecting on his departure, Kyriacou noted the personal challenges of living apart from his family.
“It has not been an easy decision as Munster is a club very close to my heart. I’m particularly proud of winning the URC and for all the young players I have helped develop,” he said.
