Bath Rugby’s attack coach Lee Blackett has been named head coach of England A for their upcoming fixture against Ireland A later this month.

Blackett, who previously served as attack coach for England A’s 38-17 victory over Australia A in November, now steps up to take charge of the squad for this crucial Test match.

The former Wasps head coach joined Bath last season and has been instrumental in shaping the club’s attacking style. His elevation to head coach of England A marks another step forward in his coaching career.

Blackett will be supported by an experienced coaching setup, featuring Exeter Chiefs assistant coach Haydn Thomas, who retains his role as defence coach after contributing to England A’s victory over Australia.

In addition, Red Roses forwards coach Louis Deacon and Northampton Saints scrum coach Matt Ferguson will join the backroom team, bringing a wealth of experience to the squad.

Speaking on his appointment, Blackett expressed his enthusiasm for the challenge ahead:

"I was honoured to be asked to take up the role. I really enjoyed being part of the England A coaching team in the week leading up to facing Australia A last Autumn.

"Having that opportunity to work with quality players and staff was a hugely positive experience. To be asked to lead it is something I am really excited for."

England Rugby’s executive director of performance rugby, Conor O’Shea, emphasized the importance of continuity and development in the England A setup.

He praised the inclusion of Blackett and Thomas, highlighting their impact in the win over Australia A, and welcomed Deacon and Ferguson to the coaching group.

"We are excited to see Lee and Haydn continue their work with this team and provide continuity off the back of a fantastic win against Australia A in November," said O’Shea.

He further elaborated on the role of England A in nurturing emerging talent, stating that the team serves as a crucial platform for players and coaches to gain international experience and aligns with England Rugby’s long-term vision.

"The England A games offer a platform for emerging players in the English game and show a commitment to an ambitious, unified, and winning England, as we look to inspire the next generation of England Rugby supporters."
