London Irish full back Tom Homer has been ruled out for a minimum of eight weeks after it was confirmed last night he suffered a grade two MCL knee sprain in Saturday’s London Double Header fixture against Harlequins.

Homer was only on the field for seven minutes before he was forced off. The injury is completely unrelated to the groin injury that kept him out of the majority of last season.

London Irish Director of Rugby, Brian Smith said: “It is a set-back for Tom and the Club."

He then added that Tom "has had a great pre-season and was chomping at the bit to be back playing. We have an excellent medical and rehab set up at the Club and will ensure Tom gets the best possible support to ensure he fully recovers from the injury.

"The back three is a very competitive position at the Club and with Tom absent, others will have a chance to stake a claim for the jersey.”

Tom joined the club in 2008, marking his debut with a brace of tries against Saracens, alongside an impressive career in the England age-group ranks.

After the opening round loss to London rivals Harlequins, the Exiles next travel north to face Newcastle on Saturday.
