Grant Gilchrist signs a new deal with Edinburgh

Edinburgh have secured another of their big names on a new contract after lock Grant Gilchrist signed a deal stretching to May 2017.

The Murrayfield outfit have been busying tying down their out-of-contract top performers and Gilchrist - recently linked with a move to Toulon - is delighted to be staying put.

He said: "I'm really excited about next season. This is the club I have grown up with. I came through the academy here and I've now been part of the first team for over five years.

"I care a lot about the club and I really believe we've got the players and the culture at the club to have prolonged success."

The Scotland international has struggled with injuries over the last 18 months and will sit out the remainder of the current campaign with a fractured elbow.

But he is looking forward to a fresh start next term.

He said: "The last couple of years have been a frustration for me but I'm looking forward to being fully fit for pre-season.

"I'm really hungry to play for Edinburgh again and looking forward to giving my all."

Head coach Alan Solomons said: "It is fantastic news for the club that Gilco has extended his stay with us.

"He is a top flight player with International experience who adds huge value both on and off the field.

"He is a great bloke and a very good leader who, I believe, has a major role to play in the future of the club.

"Personally, I thoroughly enjoy working with Gilco and am chuffed that he will be with us as we continue to develop the club."

Meanwhile, Jason Tovey will make his Edinburgh debut in Friday's Murrayfield clash with Zebre.

The stand-off, who joined on loan from Dragons last week, will start in the number 10 jersey with Phil Burleigh moving to inside centre.

Sean Kennedy comes in at scrum-half and flanker Mike Coman returns for his 50th appearance.

Edinburgh sit seventh in the Guinness PRO12 and are aiming to at least break into the top six to guarantee a place in the European Champions Cup.

Solomons said: "Every game is absolutely vital for us and it is imperative that we deliver on Friday night."
