England lock George Martin has been ruled out of the final two rounds of the Six Nations after failing to recover from knee and shoulder injuries.

The 23-year-old, who started England’s first two games, will miss matches against Italy and Wales as he continues rehabilitation.

Martin featured in England’s opening-round loss to Ireland and their dramatic win against France before being left out of the squad for last weekend’s Calcutta Cup victory over Scotland due to fitness concerns.

It has now been confirmed that he will not return in time for the remainder of the tournament.

England’s skills and kicking coach, Kevin Sinfield, confirmed that while Martin had been managing a knee issue for some time, it was his shoulder injury that ultimately ruled him out of the competition.

"Unfortunately he won't play any further part in the Six Nations for us.

"He's actually got two injuries – the knee, which has been a niggle for some time, and the shoulder as well. It will be the shoulder that will keep him out."

Despite the setback, Sinfield remains hopeful about Martin’s recovery timeline, suggesting that his return may not be too far off.

"We're very hopeful it won't be long after the Six Nations, but there's still some medics investigating further."

With two matches remaining, England currently sit third in the Six Nations standings, trailing France by one point and unbeaten leaders Ireland by four.
