England are expected to make key changes for their upcoming Six Nations clash against France at Twickenham, with Fin Smith likely to start at fly-half.
The Northampton Saints playmaker, who has made seven international appearances off the bench, is set to be handed his first Test start as head coach Steve Borthwick looks to regroup following England’s loss to Ireland in their tournament opener.
If Smith starts at No. 10, fellow playmaker Marcus Smith could shift to full-back, a tactical adjustment aimed at maximizing England’s attacking threat. Attack coach Richard Wigglesworth emphasized the benefits of having both players on the field.
Wigglesworth highlighted Marcus Smith’s playmaking ability and decision-making skills, noting that his presence at full-back could add another dimension to England’s attack.
"Marcus is obviously another set of eyes that are very opportunistic. ‘Where’s the space? Who can I beat?’" said Wigglesworth.
"But Freddie Steward brings an incredible level of high ball skill and a kick return that is incredibly decisive on the way back. There are competing demands that you are trading off all the time."
He also praised Fin Smith’s development, adding, "We are blessed with having three 10s that can all play international rugby to a high level. Fin has had less chance than the rest at the moment, but he is really clear with his game, he is confident without being arrogant and wants to get better."
The 22-year-old Northampton fly-half has impressed at club level and is seen as a crucial part of England’s future. England centre Henry Slade acknowledged his vision and game management skills.
"Fin sees space really well," said Slade. "There’s always going to be space on the field somewhere, you can’t defend everything, and he sees it really well.
"Obviously he’s a slightly different 10 to Marcus. Marcus has got that X factor in terms of beating a man one-on-one and all that stuff, but Fin is very measured. He speaks very well.
"A big part of a number 10’s role is moving the team around to where they need to be on the pitch and he’s been really good at that."
England have already been forced into one change for the match against France, as Cadan Murley, who scored on his debut against Ireland, has been ruled out with a foot injury. This could prompt a reshuffle in the backline, with Steward potentially moving to the wing to cover Murley’s absence.
Changes in the forward pack are also possible, with Saracens No. 8 Tom Willis in contention for a starting role.
