Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend described his team's 27-22 defeat to Fiji in the final game of the summer tour on Saturday as "disappointing".

Townsend's stint with the Dark Blues started with a lot of promise as they registered a 13-34 victory over Italy and followed it with a 19-24 triumph against Wallabies. Just when it looked like Scotland will end their summer tour unbeaten, they succumbed to a five point loss against Fiji that pushed them down to sixth position in the rankings.

Even though Ross Ford, Ruaridh Jackson and Fraser Brown scored tries for Scotland, their efforts went in vain as Peceli Yato and Henry Seniloli crossed over for the hosts while fly-half Ben Volavola contributed with 17 points.

"Really disappointing we didn't win," Townsend said.

"The main parts of the game - the defence, the contact, our attack accuracy - weren't anywhere near where they need to be."

Scotland were also hampered by the loss of Finn Russell, who joined the Lions camp last week. Peter Horne started at fly-half and later switched to centre when Duncan Taylor went off, handing the kicking duties to Ruaridh Jackson.

Even though, Jackson did score a try, the backs were put to stern test as they struggled to breach Fiji's defence.

"It was a great experience to come here, playing in a different environment, different from anything our players have faced," he said.

"We are going to have regular games against Polynesian teams - we play Samoa in November and might have one in our World Cup group.

"It is great to face these teams - not so good when you lose but there are areas where we will be a better team from what we learned."
