Fijian forward Saimoni Vunilagi dies aged 26
Kyuden Voltex forward Saimoni Vunilagi has died aged 26 after suffering symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke following training.

Japanese rugby club Kyuden Voltex have announced the death of Fijian forward Saimoni Vunilagi at the age of 26.
Vunilagi died on Friday, August 7, after being hospitalised earlier in the week with symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke following a team training session.
Saimoni Vunilagi Dies Aged 26
Vunilagi became unwell following Kyuden Voltex training on Monday, August 3, and was subsequently transported to a medical facility for treatment.
Despite receiving medical care, the forward died on Friday morning. The club said its players, coaching staff and wider organisation had been left devastated by his sudden death.
Kyuden Voltex also expressed its condolences to Vunilagi’s family and remembered the Fijian for his generous personality and powerful playing style.
"After team practice on Monday, August 3, 2026, Saimoni displayed symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke.
"He was transported to a medical facility for treatment, but despite the best efforts of the medical team, he sadly passed away.
"The players, staff, and all team associates are devastated by this sudden news.
"Although Saimoni had only recently joined Kyushu KV, his generous spirit and powerful style of play had raised high hopes for his contributions in the upcoming season.
"We humbly pray for the repose of his soul and extend our heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family."
Kyuden Voltex Mourns Fijian Forward
Vunilagi had only recently joined Kyuden Voltex ahead of the 2026-27 Japanese rugby season and had been preparing for his first campaign with the second-tier League One club.
The club said there had been considerable excitement about what the 26-year-old could contribute to the team following his arrival.
His death comes just weeks after he completed his move from Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath, where he had played in Japan Rugby League One.
Vunilagi Built Rugby Career in Japan
Born in Fiji, Vunilagi had spent several years developing his rugby career in Japan after completing his schooling in New Zealand.
He attended Daito Bunka University and graduated in 2023 before joining Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath. He made three senior appearances for the club before moving to Kyuden Voltex during the 2026 offseason.
