World Rugby has shortlisted England trio Maro Itoje, Owen Farrell and Billy Vunipola in a list of six players for the Player of the Year 2016 in the men's category.

Ireland's number eight Jamie Heaslip and New Zealand pair of Dane Coles and Beauden Barrett form the remaining nominees for their performance in the last one-year.

Itoje, Farrell and Vunipola have played an integral part in England's 10-match unbeaten streak and nine under head coach Eddie Jones during which they won the Grand Slam for the first time in 13 years and also whitewashed Wallabies 3-0 for the first time in Australia as well.

The trio were also part of the Saracens team that completed a double triumph of Aviva Premiership and European Champions Cup last season.

Meanwhile, England captain Sarah Hunter along with Fiao'o Fa'amausili of New Zealand and France's Gaelle Mignot have been shortlisted for the player of the year award in the women's category.

"There is class in abundance on this shortlist. There is also a great mix of experienced, proven campaigners and exciting young talent," World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont said.

"It is testament to the current strength of the men's and women's 15s game that there was so much competition for these prestigious awards," Beaumont said.

"With Women's Rugby World Cup 2017 just around the corner it is great to see such strong competition for the women's award.

"Hunter, Fa'amausili and Mignot have been exceptional and thoroughly deserve their place on the shortlist."

The winner is expected to be announced on Sunday.
