England lose injured pair

England will be without centre Brad Barritt for the second Test with South Africa in Johannesburg next weekend.

Barritt was forced to have an operation to correct a lacerated eyeball he suffered during the opening Test defeat in Durban on Saturday.

The Saracens star was forced to come off after 53 minutes of the 22-17 defeat at Kings Park with heavy swelling to his eye.

He revealed on Twitter that he had gone under the knife for a 'small op' and hopes he will be back in action soon.

Barritt tweeted: "Thanks for all the messages! Had a small op this morning to repair a laceration of the conjunctiva in my eye. Will heal very quickly!"

It proved to be an unhappy homecoming for the centre, who began his career in Durban with the Sharks before switching to the Premiership with Saracens.

There is more bad news for England as injured  full-back Mike Brown will return home from the tour of South Africa later this week.

The Harlequins man, 26, broke his right thumb during Saturday's 22-17 first Test defeat in Durban.

Bath's Nick Abendanon, who was already on holiday in South Africa, has been called up as a replacement and will join the squad on Monday.

Head coach Stuart Lancaster said of Brown: "We're still waiting for specialist opinion as to whether he needs surgery, but the reality is that he's out for six to eight weeks.

"It's very disappointing for him. He's worked hard for his opportunity and to get his place in the starting XV.

The tourists are back in action on Wednesday against the South African Barbarians with coach Stuart Lancaster having already thrown down the gauntlet to his fringe players ahead of the clash in Kimberley.
