Edinburgh Rugby has announced a major boost for the club with Scotland international and British & Irish Lions winger Duhan van der Merwe signing a new multi-year contract.
The deal will see the prolific try-scorer remain at the club until the 2027 Rugby World Cup, solidifying his place as a cornerstone of the team.
Van der Merwe, Scotland's all-time leading try-scorer, expressed his delight at re-signing: “This club and city are my home. I owe it to the fans and the team to give my all in the years to come.”
The winger turned down offers from other clubs according to reports, reaffirming his commitment to Edinburgh and its supporters.
Van der Merwe joined Edinburgh from Montpellier in 2017 and has since become one of the most dynamic players in world rugby.
Known for his powerful running and ability to deliver in big moments, he has scored 45 tries in 98 appearances, edging closer to Tim Visser’s club record of 69 tries.
The announcement comes at a crucial time for Edinburgh Rugby, with key matches on the horizon. The team faces Bayonne in the EPCR Challenge Cup this Friday, followed by the eagerly awaited 1872 Cup derbies against Glasgow Warriors.
Van der Merwe is set to make his 100th club appearance during the series, a milestone he described as a privilege:
“Playing in the 1872 Cup is always special. I can’t wait to represent this team when we return to Scottish Gas Murrayfield.”
Van der Merwe has been a standout at both club and international levels. Since his Scotland debut in 2020, he has amassed 30 international tries, including a record-breaking 28th during the summer tour to The Americas.
His contributions earned him a place in the 2021 British & Irish Lions squad, starting all three Test matches.
Edinburgh Rugby Head Coach Sean Everitt lauded the winger’s impact: “Duhan’s ability to break tackles, score tries, and create opportunities is invaluable. His experience will also help mentor younger players, enhancing the depth of our squad.”
