England head coach Eddie Jones has recalled Wasps fly-half Danny Cipriani for the upcoming Test tour of South Africa in June.

The 30-year-old's selection comes despite him announcing that he will leave Wasps at the end of the ongoing season and if he gets a chance in the matchday 23 it will be his first since August 2015.

"I've never picked him," said Jones.

"So I've picked him for the first time.

"I've watched him play closely and he deserves an opportunity. He's got to prove he's the best 10 in the squad, or the best 15."

Apart from Cipriani's recall, the 34-man squad also features as many as seven new players including New Zealand-born Brad Shields, who was released early from Hurricanes contract, Sale Sharks' Cameron Redpath, Wasps' Jack Willis and Dan Robson, Saracens' Ben Spencer and Ben Earl, Exeter Chiefs' Jonny Hill.

With Dylan Hartley ruled out of the tour due to a concussion, Owen Farrell will take over the reins while there are recalls for Billy Vunipola and Mark Wilson as well.

“Our tour to South Africa will be the most exciting challenge for us as a group since 2016. We have an opportunity to create some history next month and win the Test series, something no England side has done before," added Jones.

“There are a number of players out injured or not selected so it provides a big opportunity for others.

“With three weeks to prepare for the first Test in Johannesburg I am expecting players to come into camp with the right mind-set and we will be looking for them to break the mould in terms of being more assertive and on the front foot in everything we do.

“We will need to be physically aggressive and tactically smart against the Springboks who we know will be combative and reinvigorated by their new coaching setup."

Jones has also confirmed a 31-man squad that will take part in a training camp in Brighton next week ahead of the clash against Barbarians on 27th May.

The three-match series between England and South Africa will be played between 9th and 23rd June with Johannesburg, Bloemfontein and Cape Town being the venues.
